We last hiked this beautiful area of Central New Jersey nearly seven years ago to the day.
At that time we hiked the area north of Hospital Road and east of Route 21, an area with biking trails blazed by JORBA. The previous month we hiked a loop
across Atlantic Avenue from the village, visiting the village afterwards. Today we returned to the historic village, but hiked all trails we hadn't done
during those previous two visits.
Using this map we parked at the large lot on Hurley Pond Road and headed south on the Upper Squankum trail (the path of a rail trail), passing under IS-195, continuing all the way to the paved Capital-to-Coast trail across Atlantic Avenue. We visited the historic village, buying three big delicious cookies at "The Bakery" (one of the original buildings of the village) before taking the Canal Trail north all the way back to the Upper Squankum, and back to the car. One of the highlights was the bald eagle at the very far end of Long Swamp Pond. Total distanced hiked today was 5.8 miles in about 2.5 hours.
