Round Mountain (Northern Section)

Round Mountain, Northern Section (5/13/2011)

We took a vacation day from work to make a three-day weekend and hit another preserve in Central Jersey, this time the Round Mountain Preserve in Readington Township. This past Saturday we hiked Cold Brook Preserve, which was basically flat except for some slight undulating hills. Round Mountain is just that -- a mountain, so today there was a fair amount of climbing, though nothing strenuous.

We parked at the Bouman-Stickney Farmstead and following this map, we hiked a 4-mile lollipop in 2 1/4 hours covering the majority of paths in the northern section of the preserve: basically the red-blazed trail (orange on the map) with the white-blazed trail and two small sections of walking on County Road 629. One of the highlights was when the white trail skirted the paddock of a horse stable and we got to pet the three mares that were grazing on the other side of the fence!
