The Great Swamp, East

Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, East Trails (12/2/2017)

The last time we visited this national refuge, less than 15 minutes from our house, was almost exactly eight years ago to the day. The first time we hiked it was over eleven years ago. Where does the time go? Since those hikes no new trails have been blazed, but after so many years it's almost like doing it for the first time. So we returned today to hike the eastern network of trails using this map.

We parked in the lot at the end of Meyersville Road and headed south on Orange, making a left on Green, then doing the Beige spur before returning to the Orange trail via Green. We continued south on Orange, then did the Silver spur (out and back), then took Orange all the way to the end, before returning all the way back on Orange. What a beautiful area this is. There are no mountains, no views, no lakes and no rivers. But the awesome beauty of the uninterrupted swamp (which was close to being a major airport), is at times breathtaking.

Total distance hiked today was 5.3 miles in 2 hours and 45 minutes.
