Horn Hill Bike Path

Horn Hill Bike Path, Harriman State Park (4/22/2018)

Between 2005 and 2013 Laura and I hiked approximately 65 times in this glorious state park in upstate New York, trying to hike as many trails as we possibly could, being limited only by time and distance, leaving unhiked only those trails far from parking areas. During those nine years I took hundreds of photos from trails much-travelled (like those near Reeve's Visitor Center, which is a mob scene on weekends), to trails that only deer and bears frequented. As a result 32 of my photos appeared in the wonderful book "Circuit Hikes in Harriman" in 2015, a book in which author Don Weise described hikes including those trails that we hiked that were frequented mainly by deer and bears! Earlier this year, Don released the second edition of the book, which includes two hikes which weren't in the first edition. Last month we hiked one of them, and today we headed back to do the other.

We parked in the huge southern lot of the Anthony Wayne Recreation Area, and following the "Bike Trail" blazes the entire way, did Hike #36 "Horn Hill Bike Path" in the book. We hiked small segments of this through the years, but not all of it. Incidentally, I can't imagine anyone biking the lower southern loop on Horn Hill, with its relatively steep, and very worn, rocky trail. The last thing I thought of was "bike path" while hiking that loop. And that's probably why we didn't see anyone bicycling it today.

Total distance hiked today was 5.6 miles in just under 3 hours.
