Holmdel Park - Rasmanessin Section

Ramanessin Section, Holmdel Park (5/14/2011)

We hiked the northern section of Holmdel Park back in January of 2009. At that time we were following a hike in the book Nature Walks in New Jersey. Since then I've been interested in heading back to walk the trails in the Ramanessin section (south of Roberts Road). So today we headed south to do just that.

We parked near the visitors center for Longstreet Farm, a living historical farm, and headed south along the southern bank of Lower Pond, visited the beautiful David C. Shaw Arboretum, then crossed over Roberts Road to the trails. We took the Steeplechase Trail all the way south to its end. The best part of this leg was when we skirted the southern and western borders of a nursery. Near the southern tip I saw a red fox on the trail, but he was too fast for me to photograph! At this point we took the Ramanessan Trail all the way back north to the Roberts Road crossing. We then took the opportunity to visit Longstreet Farm (it was closed in January, 2009), by entering through the visitor's center. There we had some nice close encounters with horses, cows, sheep, chickens and pigs.

Total distance hiked today was 4.6 miles in 2.5 hours.
