RVCR: Vista-Pond-Reservoir-Marsh Loop

Vista-Pond-Reservoir-Marsh Loops, Ramapo Valley County Reservation (10/23/2016)

After spending nearly two weeks in the absolutely gorgeous country of Ireland, we actually contemplated being disappointed being back in New Jersey. After seeing the jaw-dropping beauty of the Ring of Kerry, the Giant's Causeway and the Cliffs of Moher, what could be as awe-inspiring, we thought? Well, we couldn't have picked a better place and a better Sunday to return to the trails of New Jersey. The fall foliage was peak this morning, absolutely stunning, making this one of the best places to be. Needless to say, we didn't have a single thought about Ireland during the 3.5 hours. Wow, what beauty we have been treated to in the past few weeks!

A lot has changed about the trail network here in the last year. There's now a Vista Loop, a Pond Loop, a Reservoir Loop and a Marsh Loop, made of existing trails, existing woods roads and brand new trails. So today we headed to check out the new loops. Note that all current maps are no longer accurate!

Using this very new map, we parked at the huge parking lot on Route 202 and headed west into the park on the Yellow Vista Loop, heading north along the newly-blazed Pond Loop (the path has been there for a long time). We then continued north on the Vista Loop, visiting Hawk Rock and Cactus Ledge, then Ridge Overlook before finally reaching the overlook over MacMillan Reservoir. Here we took the reservoir loop north, next heading west on the new Marsh Loop. At its end we continued on Vista to the River path which we took back to Vista and then the car.

Total distance hiked was 5.1 miles in 3.5 hours.
