Rifle Camp Park

Rifle Camp Park (3/19/2017)

The last time we hiked this park was over seven years ago. At that time we hiked the yellow perimeter trail in a counter-clockwise direction. We returned today to have another go at it. And wow have a few things changed. The quarry south is now a neighborhood of new houses. Compare the first photo in the ninth row of this collection with this photo which shows that in 2009 it was nothing more than a huge hole. The observatory is still there, though, and the remains of the bobsled. And the views, as they were in 2009, are spectacular.

Using this map we parked in the circle at the observatory and took the yellow trail in a clockwise direction. The snow was deep in spots and we were quite exhausted at the end. While Laura was able to walk on top of the frozen snow, I fell through with just about every step. So it was tough going.

Total distance hiked today was about 3.4 miles in 2.5 hours. As you can see, it was slow going in the snow!
