Last year we visited this area labeled the Doris Duke Wildlife Sanctuary on the 2013 edition
of NYNJTC Map #100 (Sterling Forest), and hiked a circuit following mostly woods roads on the map (the majority had not yet been blazed). Today we returned
and hiked the loop once again, which is now an official Hike of the Week on the
New York-New Jersey Trail Conference page. We did the hike in the reverse direction. Once again we headed north on the Allis trail to reach the viewpoint just
south of its intersection with the Appalachian Trail. And yes, that's snow you see in the photos! It was actually up to our ankles in some spots! Not a flake
accumulated in Morris County, NJ where we live, but as soon as we headed west into Sterling Forest from Route 17 we started seeing the snow.
Total distance hiked today was 3.9 miles in just over 2.5 hours.
