White Lake
My friends Daniela and Shawnee always manage to find new places to hike, places off the beaten track, like this place which they visited last weekend. It's a wonderful area in the Kittatinnies of New Jersey centered around White Lake but which also includes ruins (pretty impressive ones at that) and a wide variety of terrain: undulating hills, deep forests and open meadows filled with moths and butterflies. So we headed there today.

Using this map we parked at the small lot at the small restored barn (the west-most "P" on the map) and headed south into the forest on Red. We looped past the lake view and then headed NE on Blue which we took past the boat launch, through the meadow and back into the woods before next turning right and heading east on Green. This trail ends directly at the ruins of a lime kiln (with an informative sign). Next we headed south on the Ridge & Valley Trail to the very impressive ruins of the marlworks, including which used to be a giant ice warehouse which stored up to 20,000 tons of ice. West of the ruins is a trail leading to an awesome view of White Lake. We next backtracked along the R&V trail, passing the kiln once again and continued all the way to the northern end of Blue, which we took all the way back to the car, but not before spending a lot of time photographing moths and butterflies in the meadows near the boat launch.

Total distance hiked today was 5.6 miles in 3 hours, with a fair amount of that time exploring ruins and butterflies.
