Apshawa Preserve

Apshawa Preserve (7/8/2018)

I haven't been to this beautiful preserve for at least six years. And the last time Laura visited was almost eleven years ago. Seeing that new trails had been blazed since then, we decided to head back and do as many trails as we could.

Using this map, we parked in the large lot and headed into the preserve through the deer exclosure gate, first following Blue. When we arrived at 8:30 AM or so, there was just one other car there. By the time we put our hiking boots on, there were five other cars. When we finished the hike nearly four hours later, almost the entire lot was filled (at least twenty cars). This place has clearly gotten very popular since the last time we hiked it.

We took Blue all the way to Red, which we took north to Yellow. Six years ago, Yellow was totally flooded and impassable. Today it was no longer flooded, but we couldn't go very far because of overgrowth. And we tried in both directions. So we continued on Red in a counter-clockwise direction around beautiful Butler Reservoir, until we reached the eastern leg of Green. This we took south to Orange, then took Blue east, then north, reaching Purple. We took Purple south, having lunch at a beautiful little pond just west, before passing through an exclosure gate, then following the fence east, and then a faint path back up to the parking lot.

Total distance hiked today was 5 miles in 3 hours and 45 minutes.
