Arden Mountain

Arden Mountain, Sterling Forest (5/2/2020)

This morning we did a lollipop hike incorporating woods roads and parts of blazed trails in Sterling Forest that we hadn't done before.

Using the NYNJTC Map #100 for Sterling Forest, we parked at parking lot P1 (Indian Hill) in the northern area of the park, off CR 19 (Orange Turnpike). We first headed east on Yellow, passing the green Warbler Trail and then heading north on a woods road that runs parallel to Yellow. Within a few minutes the woods road became impassable because of a huge downed tree, so we continued heading north hiking on top of a wide stone wall until we reached another woods road which climbed Arden Mountain steeply for a few minutes. (If you're not looking at the map none of this will makes sense.) Reaching the northern-most woods road at the foot of Arden Mountain, we headed west towards Orange Turnpike picking up the AT without having to walk on the road. We climbed Arden Mountain on the AT heading east, with a nice view to the west. Continuing east, we next headed south on the Blue trail. When we reached Yellow, we took that all the way back to the car.

You can see an iPhone screenshot of our track here. Total distance hiked today was 3.5 miles in 3 hours.
