Barcelona Neck Preserve (4/5/2013)

This was the fourth of five amazing hikes we did on the southern fork of Long Island the week of April 2. We followed the hike "Barcelona Neck Preserve" in the book Trail Guide to the Southern Fork, though the area is also covered in the book Hiking Long Island, another terrific book of this area.

Today was the only day it rained during the entire week. It was pouring when we woke up and we weren't sure we'd be able to hike. But we decided to drive from East Hampton (where we were staying) to Sag Harbor anyway, and it rained the entire drive. But after we parked, and donned our rain slickers, it stopped. It was cloudy for about 15 minutes and then the sun burst out for the majority of the hike, which was wonderful. There are amazing views of the distant Cedar Point Lighthouse (to which we hiked two days earlier). We didn't see any seals today, but I did managed to zoom into Billy Joel's house in Sag Harbor (you can see it in one of the photos). Later that afternoon I actually bumped into the Piano Man sitting on a bench in Sag Harbor with his two pugs!

Total distance hiked today was about 3.5 miles in 2 hours.
