Buckabear Pond West

Buckabear Pond West, Newark Watershed (6/26/2020)

Today we took a day off from work to do a birthday hike (mine!). We returned once again to the Newark Watershed to hike to the bank of Buckabear Pond, this time on the western side.

Today we parked in P4, and after a very short road walk south on Clinton Road, we headed into the woods on the Clinton West trail, which comingles with the Highlands trail. Climbing steeply, after we go to the top of the ridge we continued until we made a left and headed south on the Bearfort Waters Clinton trail. We had planned on continuing all the way south to the southern tip of the pond, where we were unable to cross last week. But we got sidetracked with various woods roads halfway south. Two roads led to magnificent views of Buckabear Pond. We also found a trail that headed south along the western bank, but it became too overgrown to continue at one point. After taking in the many views and exploring a myriad of woods roads (none of which are on the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Map), we retraced our steps all the way back to the car.

Total distance hiked today was 4.1 miles in three hours and 20 minutes. You can see our track by clicking here. A permit is required for hiking in this area, which can be purchased at the office on Echo Lake Road.
