SMR: Bramhall Woods Roads Loop

Bramhall Woods Roads Loop, South Mountain Reservation (3/4/2019)

Continuing our exploration of previously unhiked trails in this beautiful reservation, we returned today to hike a woods road loop south of South Orange Avenue. And it was a good choice, given the 4 or 5 inches of snow that fell the day before. The trails were beautiful, but the going was slower than usual.

We parked at Bramhall Terrace, on Crest Drive and headed west into the snowy woods, doing a counter-clockwise loop following only unblazed woods roads. Judging by the many footsteps that were already in the snow at 9am, it's obvious that even these unblazed trails were heavily used yesterday after it had stopped snowing. We hiked north along the Crest Trail to close to South Orange Avenue, turned left and headed west on the Openwood Trail, passing high above Hemlock Falls (which we heard but couldn't see). We next headed south along the Rahway River until we reached the southern tip of Campbell's Pond where we turned left again and headed south on the Sunset Trail back to the Crest Trail which we took north back to the car. You can see our track here.

Total distance hiked today was 4.6 miles in almost three hours. The going was a bit slow in the snow.
