Buckabear & Clinton Reservoir

Buckbear & Clinton Reservoir, Newark Watershed (6/21/2020)

We returned to the Newark Watershed for the fifth week in a row, to hike the hill that lies north of Clinton Reservoir, but taking a trail, the red-blazed Buckabear Pond trail, that we never hiked before. We had originally planned on doing at least a 3.5-hour hike but the humidity was so high (even the rocks were sweating), and the bugs were such an annoyance, that we decided that 2.5 hours was more than enough.

We parked at P3 (the first time for us), a medium-sized lot off Clinton Road and headed south to the reservoir on the Buckabear Pond trail. When the blazed trail turned west we continued south along the well-defined woods road, enjoying an amazing view of the reservoir before heading back north, then turned west on the red trail. We took this trail all the way to the southern bank of Buckabear Pond. Years ago we were able to continue west to the Beafort Waters Clinton trail. But the area is flooded now and was impossible to navigate. So we headed south on the white-blazed Clinton West trail. When the trail turned back south, we started the slow climb to the peak, with a limited view to the east. Continuing north, we crossed the intersection with Red to continue a bit further north to take in another limited view east. At this point we retraced our steps on Red all the way back to the car.

Total distance hiked today was 3 miles in two and a half hours. A permit is required for hiking in this area, which can be purchased at the office on Echo Lake Road.
