Conifer Pass-Patriot's Path Loop

Conifer Pass-Patriot's Path Loop, Kay Environmental Center (9/26/2022)

Eight years ago we did a loop in this beautiful, rugged, varied area following many of the same trails we hiked today. This is one of our favorite areas to hike within 30 minutes of our home, so we took the day off and headed back on this somewhat chilly morning for our first autumn hike of 2022.

Using this map, we parked in the lot at the Kay Center and picked up the mowed path (not shown on the map) at the NE corner of the parking area. We headed east, then south along this mowed path which parallels some powerlines before eventually getting to the meadow. We continued south, zig-zagging a bit through the meadow on the mowed path before reaching the park entrance on Pottersville Road. We walked the very short extent of that road west following Patriot's Path south of the road. At the intersection with the red-blazed Conifer Pass trail we made a right onto that trail, then proceeded north, crossing Pottersville Road again, and continuing west then north on the eastern bank of the Black River. The previous night's rains made it rage! We continued north on the Conifer Pass trail to Orange, making a right and taking that trail at the southern edge of another meadow. We made a left on Patriot's Path and headed north back to the car. Once again, it was an amazingly varied hike, with meadows, forests and a raging river.

Total distance hiked today was 4.1 miles in nearly 3 hours.
