Copperas Lollipop

Copperas Lollipop, Newark Watershed (9/19/2020)

We hiked Copperas Mountain way back in 2012. At that time we hiked to the two vistas (very close to each other) denoted on the NYNJTC Map #125 via the Four Birds Trail, and did a lollipop which involved an unmaintained trail, then a short stretch of rail trail, and another woods road, before returning to the car on the Four Birds Trail.

Today we parked in the pulloff on Green Pond Road, where it doesn't appear a Newark Watershed permit is required. Like last time, we headed east on the Four Birds Trail all the way to the first two vistas (denoted on the map). After taking in the views of the Charlottesburg Reservoir, we continued SW on the Four Birds, next making a right on a woods road which we took west, eventually looping back east, continuing on a trail marked with blue arrows (not on any map), which we eventually took to another woords road continuing south downhill before finally reaching the Four Birds trail once again, at the foot of the mountain on the southern side. We made a left on the Four Birds and began climbing the mountain steeply. After getting to the ridge, we found another wonderful view, not denoted on the NYNJTC map. Continuing NE on the Four Birds, we retraced our steps all the way back to the car. You can see our track here.

Total distance hiked today was almost 5.2 miles in just under 3.5 hours.
