LHT: Devil's Footprint

The Devil's Footprint, Lake Hopatcong Trail (1/19/2019)

Continuing our exploration of the trails west of New Jersey's largest lake, Lake Hopatcong, we returned today to hike another part of the Lake Hopatcong Trail (which is also the Long Path for this segment), using the connector trail that passes through an area known as the Devil's Footprint.

We parked near the gate at the northern end of Brooklyn Mountain Road, and headed west, then north, on the Lake Hopatcong Connector trail, into the snow-covered woods. This woods road passes through an area denoted "The Devil's Footprint" on Google Maps. A quick web search yielded this page, which explains that the area is one of two recognized Lenni Lenape camps found in Hopatcong. We did see the flat, open area, all iced over and then covered in snow, at the point where the trail takes a northern bend on the way to joining the Long Path. Our original plan was to continue north, walking the quarter-mile along Maxim Drive before heading back into the woods and seeing Bear Pond in the snow. But the traffic was a bit heavy, and the shoulder somewhat occupied by snow. So we decided to turn back at Maxim Drive. We retraced our steps back to the car.

Total distance hiked today was 3.1 miles in about two hours and 20 minutes. The going was very slow, given that much of the path was very rocky, steep in parts, and completely covered in snow.
