Gould to Echo Lake

Gould to Echo Lake, Newark Watershed (7/25/2020)

Today we returned to Echo Lake, to hike the northwestern bank, something we haven't done since 2007. At that time we hiked all the way to a lookout (and pefect lunch spot) at the nothern tip of the lake. We did this starting from the watershed headquarters on Echo Lake Road. This time we parked on Gould Road and approached from the north via a stretch of the Highlands trail that we hadn't done before.

We parked in a small pull-off on Gould Road, just where the Highlands trail crosses. We started by heading south on the HT, eventually reaching a wide woods road (which comingled with the HT). When the HT turned left and headed east to the lake, we continued on the woods for about a mile, next making a sharp left to continue north on a different woods road, climbing. We took this north to Echo Lake, making a left and heading north along the western bank on the HT. We tried finding that amazing northern tip (like we did back in 2007), but the log bridge was no longer there (just a single log). We didn't want to chance it, so we continued on the HT all the way back to the car.

Total distance hiked today was 4.2 miles in 2.5 hours.
