Green Pond Mountain, North

Green Pond Mountain North, Newark Watershed (9/26/2020)

From October 1 until the end of the calendar year, hiking on Newark Watershed property is allowed only on Sundays. So, this was our last Saturday of hiking in the watershed during this strange, memorable year of COVID-19.

Today we returned to Green Pond Mountain, repeating part of a hike I did with my friend Andy back in July, 2012. At that time we were able to park right at the nothern trailhead of the Four Birds trail. But in the years since, the parking area at the trailhead has been put off limits to make room for a school bus turnaround. So we parked further south on Bigelow Road, where the soccer fields are located.

We walked north on Bigelow Road, and started climbing the Four Birds trail immediately, making our way past the viewpoints, which were totally obstructed this morning by heavy fog that stayed all morning. When the trail starting descending from the ridge, we took a woods road (which is not on the NYNJTC Map #125), back north, forming a large lollipop, finally re-joining the Four Birds trail, which we took all the way back to Bigelow Road. Signs of autumn were abundant. The leaves are starting to change, after the short cold snap we had earlier this week, when temperatures were near freezing.

Total distance hiked today was 2.6 miles in just over 2 hours.
