Green Pond 8

Green Pond 8, Newark Watershed (9/5/2020)

We hiked all of this, and more, way back in 2012, when we had time to continue to the second peak for more views. Today we climbed Green Pond Mountain from Green Pond Road to the several views along the southern part of the Four Birds trail on the mountain. We then returned via woods roads, criss-crossing with the blazed trail to form a figure-8, more or less.

We parked in the pulloff on Green Pond Road, where it doesn't appear a Newark Watershed permit is required. However, the entire hike occurs on Watershed land, so if you get stopped by someone patrolling the area, you need to show your hiking permit. We headed west into the woods on the white-blazed Four Birds trail, climbing steeply to reach the ridge. The vista indicated on the NYNJTC map is no longer there. But there are several amazing views along the stretch north which aren't indicated on the map. We continued heading north until we turned left on a woods road, which we climbed, eventually wrapping around south back to the white trail. We stayed on that trail, retracing our steps, before turning left on another woods road which we then took before once again reaching the white trail, forming a figure-8. Back on the white trail, we took that back to our car. You can see our track here.

Total distance hiked today was almost 3.2 miles miles in two hours and 45 minutes.
