Highlands Preserve

Highlands Preserve (2/24/2020)

This was a surprise! It's not every day that someone like me, who has hiked just about every hikeable area in New Jersey, finds a new area that they have never visited before. And yet that's exactly what happened a few days ago, while I was perusing the page for Passaic County Parks. I don't know how long this preserve has been there, but the latest NYNJTC Map #115/116 still shows unblazed woods roads near the southwest area of Greenwood Lake. But the official map shows all blazed trails. So off we headed today to hike every trail there.

Using this map we parked at the large lot on Warwick Turnpike at the southern end of the Green trail. While the map shows no parking there, there is a lot able to fit at least a dozen cars. We headed north on Green, and repeating as little of the trails as possible, managed to hike every trail in the park. It should be noted that while the map shows Orange as a spur, it actually now connects to Yellow at not just the southern point (as shown on the map), but also at the northern point (which is shown on the map). By the way, the views of the lake from the Red trail are very nice, albeit a bit obstructed. The photo on the park page, by the way, was not taken in Highlands Preseve, but rather from a viewpoint on Bearfort Mountain to the west. The area below is Highlands Preserve.

Total distance hiked today was about 5.5 miles in three hours.
