Indian Hill

Indian Hill, Sterling Forest (3/14/2020)

We have hiked Indian Hill twice in the past, the last time was in 2008, and the first time was way back in 2005! So we returned today to hike at least two trail segments that we didn't do on either of those occasions.

Today we parked in lot P1, just off Orange Turnpike, and headed south climbing on the yellow-blazed Indian Hill trail. At the intersection with the red-blazed Furnace Loop we headed east (we never did this segment before). When we reached the green-blazed Warbler trail (with a very original warbler blaze), we turned north and skirted the pond on the western bank (this was another new segment for us, in fact I'm not even sure this trail was there 12 years ago). Next we headed NW on yellow, making a right on the first woods road and taking that to yellow once again (a little short cut). The stone walls on this unblazed woods road, perhaps 20 feet wide in spots, was very impressive. We continued south on yellow, visiting many nice viewpoints, before reaching the Warbler trail once more. We took that north for the second time but also explored a couple of unmaintained trails north of the pond, finding them unmaintained. Continuing north on green, we next headed west on yellow back to the car.

Total distance hiked today was just under 5 miles in just under 3 hours, with a fair amount of climbing.
