Jones Woods

Jones Woods (12/20/2020)

We received about 6-7" of snow this past week, the first snowfall of the season. So, not knowing the situation with parking and hiking so soon after the storm, we decided to hike close to home today, so we wouldn't end up driving far just to turn around and drive back home. My friend John told me about this area a couple of weeks ago. It's within 15 minutes of where we live, but I had never heard of it before.

Using this map we parked on the shoulder of Fairmount Avenue, just north of the gravel path with the gate, which leads to the pond. We headed toward the pond, but turned north on White, taking that all the way to Mendham Road. A very tiny road walk west brought us to the other leg of White, which we took south all the way to the pond. Here we took Yellow south, along the western bank of Jones Woods Pond. We next continued on Blue, taking this all the way to where it meets Red, just north of Villa Walsh Academy. We took Red north, to Yellow, this time skirting the eastern bank of the pond, before finally heading back to the car on the gravel road.

Total distance today was 2.4 miles in just over 90 minutes. It was slow going in the snow.
