SMR: Mayapple Hill

Mayapple Hill, South Mountain Reservation (2/3/2019)

The last time we visited this nice area, smack in the middle of civilization in Essex County, New Jersey, was way back in June of 2013. So we returned today to hike an area north of Northfield Avenue (all of the other trails in this area are south), on a loop that I don't believe was there six years ago.

We parked in the very large parking lot for Mayapple Hill and headed northwest into the woods on the yellow-blazed Lenape Trail. After crossing Cedar Avenue, we continued north all the way to Whitbay Drive. Had we had more time, we would have continued north of the road at least until the Lenape Trail reached Mount Pleasant Avenue. But we had to turn back at this point (Whitbay Drive). Heading back south we made a left on the white-yellow trail, eventually reaching once again the Lenape trail. But a bit further south we made a right on the blue-dot trail, heading south. This we followed in a counter-clockwise direction, crossing Mayapple Hill Road before eventually heading north and taking the blue-stripe trail back to the car.

Total distance hiked today was 3.6 miles in just under two hours. The trails were very icy in many spots, so the going was slower than otherwise.
