SMR: Oakdale-Lenape Loop

Oakdale-Lenape Loop, South Mountain Reservation (2/23/2019)

Three weeks ago we hiked the northern-most trails of this area, on Mayapple Hill. Today we returned to do more of the trails north of Northfield Avenue.

We parked in the Oakdale parking lot on Cherry Lane, right across from the Orange Reservoir. Starting at the kiosk at the western-most part of the lot, we headed into the woods and up the mountain on a small trail that leads to the red-blazed Oakdale Trail. We turned left heading south. We took the trail all of the way to its southern end, closely paralleling the paved Valley View Drive (close to traffic). At the end we headed west, then north on the yellow-blazed Lenape trail, taking it north, eventually crossing over Northfield Avenue (the trail crosses on an overpass whose only purpose now is the trail). We continued north, reaching the Mayapple parking lot, where we parked for our last hike. Here we decided to continue north on the Lenape trail, repeating part of our last hike, until we reached the blue-dotted Mayapple Loop trail at Cedar Avenue. We turned right and took this trail past Mayapple Rock, crossing Mayapple Hill Road, before turning left on the Lenape trail. We retraced our steps south on this trail, before next turning right on the red-blazed Oakdale trail and taking that back to the car.

Total distance hiked today was 4.9 miles in about two hours and 45 minutes.
