Oregon - Day 5 (7/15/2007)
Today we drove to the
Oregon Caves National Monument, where we were as close to the California
border as we would be during the entire trip. The last 8 miles of driving on
Route 46, a tortuous uphill zigzag, was even more memorable than the caves
themselves! After the 90-minute guided tour inside the caves, and a hike back
to the parking lot, we ate lunch in the coffee shop of the
Oregon Caves Chateau. Two waitresses, along with the cook, went out of their
way to prepare for us a vegetarian lunch (a grilled portobello mushroom cap with
pesto sauce on a bun, with fries) despite our protests. We had dinner at our
hotel, the elegant Wolf Creek Inn, which was followed by a walk up and down Main
Street of Wolf Creek.
