Pumphouse Lollipop

Pumphouse Lollipop, Wawayanda State Park (10/11/2020)

Today we returned to Wawayanda State Park to check out the early fall foliage and to hike a brand new trail that wasn't here the last time we hiked around Wawayanda Lake.

Using the map on the second page of this NYNJTC pamphlet we parked in the huge lot for the visitor's center (denoted by the P at the southern tip of the orange-blazed Pumphouse trail on the NE bank of Wawayanda Lake). We headed into the woods first skirting the northern bank of the lake for a bit, but then backtracked to the Pumphouse trail, which we took north and then west. We then continued on the blue-blazed Boulder Garden trail, which used to be part of the Pumphouse trail. It's an enchanting stretch that passes may interesting boulders and requires hiking on rocks for part of the time. At its southern end, we made a right onto the Pumphouse trail. This part of the trail wasn't there the last time we were here. We took this north, picking up an unblazed woods road, which can be seen on the map, heading north. We took this all the way to Wawayanda Road. We next retraced our steps back to the Pumphouse trail (more of the new section), which we then took all the way back to our car.

In essence we did a lollipop, but with sticks on both ends. When we arrived at the park at 9 AM, we were the second car in the huge lot. At noon there were at least a hundred cars.

Total distance today was 4.3 miles in 2 hours and 40 minutes.
