Saffin Pond Lollipop

Saffin Pond Lollipop, Mahlon Dickerson Reservation (11/14/2020)

The last time we hiked in Mahlon Dickerson was over seven years ago. And at that time we hiked north of Weldon Road. We hadn't hiked the area south of Weldon Road since September of 2009. So we returned today to do exactly that.

Using this map, we parked at Saffin Pond on Weldon Road, and headed south along the eastern bank of Saffin Pond on the Highlands trail. We continued east on the HT and intended on contining south along this trail to Weldon Brook (as we did in 2009), but this part of the HT is now closed. So we headed north on the HT to Yellow. We took Yellow northeast, where it co-mingles with the newly re-routed HT to the point just north of Headley Overlook. Here we abandoned yellow and headed south on the HT to Headley Overlook. We then continued south, once again picking up yellow, which we took south to white (which is soon to be re-blazed in blue). This we took west to blue (which is currently blue). We took this twisty trail, climbing the mountain, to where it comes closest to the closed section of the HT. We bushwacked 20 yards back to the HT, retracing our steps back to Saffin Pond, this time using the gravel road on the western bank to return to our car.

Total distance hiked today was 4.9 miles in three hours.
