SMR: Southern Loop

Southern Loop, South Mountain Reservation (10/5/2008)

This is the Hike of the Week for 2/24/2004 as described on the NY-NJ Trail Conference website. It also happens to be a shortened version of Hike #29 "South Mountain Reservation" in the 3rd edition of 50 Hikes in New Jersey. That book describes an 8.5-mile figure-8, while this hike is the bottom 5-mile circle of that figure-8. There were so many interesting spurs, with look-outs and ruins, that we ended up hiking nearly six miles as opposed to the estimated five.
