Taylortown Reservoir

Taylortown Reservoir, Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area (11/7/2020)

The last time we hiked in this area was in 2018 when we hiked the Turkey Mountain section. But the last time we hiked the part west of Boonton Avenu was back in 2012. So we returned today, intending on hiking a large loop which included the western bank of Taylortown Reservoir. When we arrived at the huge visitor center parking lot at about 8:45 in the morninng, the entire lot was already filled! And cars were starting to park along both sides of Boonton Avenue. Realizing that this area was going to be super busy, we drove north to the Boonton Recreation Field and parked there.

Using this map, we headed into the woods on the green trail, taking that to the white trail, then to the orange trail, which came right to the bank of the reservoir. The fall foliage is past peak, but still beautiful. We did see at least a dozen other hikers, but nowhere near as many as we would have seen on the southern end. Since the temperature was unseasonably warm today (near 80 F), we decided to cut the hike short and retraced out footsteps after hiking for a bit over an hour. By the way, as we drove south along Boonton Avenue, there were cars parked on both sides of the road near the vistitor center for at least a quarter of a mile. This area has sure gotten popular!

Total distance hiked today was 2.8 miles in two hours and ten minutes.
