Tiger & Hogback Mountains

Hogback & Tiger Mountains, Sterling Forest (2/17/2020)

We haven't hiked in this beautiful park in over two years. A while back I was keeping track, on a marked map, of every single trail and woods road we hiked here. Today we returned to hike a couple of trails we hadn't yet done. There was nothing spectacular about today's hike, no ponds, rivers or views, but we've been so busy with other things lately that we haven't had the opportunity to be out in nature much this year. So it was a blessing to simply be on a trail!

Using the NYNJTC Map #100 for Sterling Forest, we parked at pull-off P6 on Ironwood Drive and headed north on the Hogback Mountain trail until we reached pull-off P4 on Route 17A. We also walked a short woods road spur to the powerline cut. Returning south we next tried to find the peak of Tiger Mountain on an unblazed woods road that became narrower and more overgrown by the foot. While we did get quite far, we turned back before reaching the end of the path denoted on the map. Continuing south, we next took a woods road to find the peak of Hogback Mountain, also without success.

Total distance hiked today was 4.6 miles in just under 3 hours. For those wanting to find the peaks of Tiger and Hogback Mountains, you can see how far we were able to get by clicking here
