Wildcat Loop

Wildcat Loop, Newark Watershed and Wawayanda State Park (11/29/2020)

We returned to the Newark Watershed for the nineteenth hike this year. We hadn't hiked here since the end of September because hiking is allowed only on Sundays in October to December, and Saturday is our usual hiking day. But this weekend we couldn't hike on Saturday, so we headed back today to hike another beautiful trail in this permit-only area.

We parked in parking area P5, on the western side of Clinton Road (a permit is needed to park here). We first headed into the woods on the spur to reach the Yellow trail, which we took north. This part was identical to what we did on August 15 of this year. But this time, we hiked the unblazed Wildcat Loop, which my friend Daniela did on September 7. We hiked it in a clockwise direction, heading west on it from the yellow, looping north, then east until we eventually got back to yellow. At this point we headed north on the red-blazed Old Coal trail, passing the Project U.S.E. lodge, to take in the view of the swamp Bearfort Waters. We then retraced Red, then Yellow, then headed east, continuing on the Wildcat Loop in the clockwise direction. Evetually we reached yellow once more, where we turned left and headed south all the way back to the car. This loop is a beautiful trail in spots, with a wide open feel and seasonal views because of the leaveless trees. There are also several interesting rock formations. It isn't blazed, but it's quite easy to follow.

Total distance hiked today was 4.5 miles miles in three hours.
