Bearfort Swamps

Bearfort Swamps, Abram S. Hewitt State Forest (7/18/2020)

Today was our ninth hike since purchasing our hiking permits in May. This time we returned to an area we have hiked several times in the past, logging some woods roads for the first time.

We parked in parking area P8, where a permit is needed to park. Way back in 2012, we hiked a circuit comprised of the blue-blazed Spring North trail and the red-blazed Terrace Pond Red trail. Today we started by heading west on the paved road (littered with horse dung, not surprisingly, since the Pine Ridge Equestrian Center is right next door to P8) and continued on woods roads west until we wrapped back NE to pick up the yellow-blazed Terrace Pond South trail. This we took past a beautiful swamp west of the trail, a swamp we have passed several times, almost always on hikes to Terrace Pond. We continued north on the Yellow Dot trail, and then headed east on the Terrace Pond Red trail and then finally the blue-blazed Spring North trail, which we took all the way back to the paved road, and back to our car. We ate lunch on the rock wall adjacent to the kiosk, during which the two friendly goats from the equestrian center snuck through the fence and came right up to us for food!

Total distance hiked today was 5 miles in two hours and 50 minutes. You can see our track here.
