Dunker Pond, North

Dunker Pond, North, Newark Watershed (7/12/2020)

Today was our eighth hike since purchasing our hiking permits in May. This time we returned to Dunker Pond, which we hadn't visited since 2007, the first time we had permits.

Like last week, we parked in P9 and then headed up the gravel road until we reached the southern end of Lud Day Road. We headed north on this rocky woods road, eventually passing the Highlands trail, and then repeating a section from last week. We made a left on a woods road about 0.4 miles north of the Highlands trail, and took this all the way west to a nice view of Dunker Pond from the northeastern bank. Retracing our steps back to Lud Day Road, we headed back south. When we reached the Highlands trail, we took that west, all the way to a beautiful lookout to the southeast. The last photo from the 2007 collection was taken here. That makeshift log bench is still there! Some things never change! After taking in the view, we headed back to the car, along the Highlands trail, then Lud Day Road, and then the gravel road back to P9.

As an aside, the bugs were out in full force again today. But we came armed with $3 insect nets that we wore over out heads nearly the entire hike. They did a great job!

Total distance hiked today was 4.6 miles in just under three hours.
