McKeog's Meadow

McKeag's Meadow, Sterling Forest (9/25/2021)

We hiked Sterling Forest a lot last year, during COVID, when many of New Jersey's parks were still closed. But this is the first time we've been there since November of last year, this time to hike an area that we really hadn't done since one snowy morning way back in 2008. We did hike part of this area three years ago, but focused more on the Hutchinson Trail.

Today we parked in lot P13, where nearly the entire lot was filled with the cars and trucks of a trail crew relocating the McKeag's Meadow trail, which we hiked today. According to one very knowledgable woman with whom we spoke near the end of our hike, they're rerouting the trail because it's currently an old woods road which isn't in very good shape. The new trail will be 5-6 miles longer than the current one. She doesn't know when it will be finished.

So, today we hiked the old woods road, still known as the McKeag's Meadow trail, blazed in yellow. We did it in a clockwise direction. Near the northern tip, we took a spur on an unblazed woods road to an area labeled MMC on the NYNJTC map for Sterling Forest. The trail goes much further north than is indicated on the map. We reached a very impressive mine shaft, or at least we thought it was one (you can see two photos in the fourth and fifth row of photos), before turning back and completing the loop back to the car.

Total distance hiked today was just under 4 miles in 2 hours and 10 minutes. If you're hiking in this area in the next few weeks, stop by to thank the trail crew for all the hard work they do!
